My name is Luis Manuel, although most people call me Luma.
I am a researcher and educator specializing in conversation analysis (CA), an interdisciplinary approach to the study of everyday interaction. My research examines both how CA knowledge and skills travel across research and applied settings and how indirect, covert, or otherwise delicate forms of talk and communicative action are organized and made accountable in interaction. I also support the development of the Spanish-speaking CA community through teaching, methodological resources, skills-training initiatives, and research networks.
I am currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the UCLA Department of Family Medicine, where I apply this broader interest in interaction to research on survey data collection and health communication in primary care. I hold a PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and an MA in Linguistics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), where I also developed and taught courses on the social dimensions of language.
