My name is Luis Manuel, although most people call me Luma.
I am a researcher and educator specializing in conversation analysis (CA), an interdisciplinary approach to the study of social interaction in everyday life. Broadly, my research examines language and communication in institutional and organizational settings, with particular attention to how interaction shapes the ways we gather and interpret “data” about the social world. I am also interested in the intellectual history and methodological influence of CA across the social sciences and in applied practice.
I am currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the UCLA Department of Family Medicine, where I lead research on survey interaction and collaborate on projects aimed at improving primary care and health communication. I hold a PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and an MA in Linguistics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), where I also developed and taught courses on the social dimensions of language.
